Currywurst is a classic at German takeaways. But you can also easily make your own currywurst at home. I’ll show you how you can easily prepare a vegan alternative at home. This recipe takes only 25 minutes and requires only very basic ingredients that you usually have in your pantry anyway.

Currywurst

Currywurst is a very popular street food all over Germany and can often be bought at takeaways in pedestrian zones or shopping malls. The currywurst has a long tradition in Germany and was invented in Berlin back in 1949, according to records.

Unlike other curry sauces, my recipe is not based on ketchup, but is made with canned diced tomatoes, orange juice, tomato paste, curry powder and a few other ingredients. For my curry sausage recipe, I prefer to use an “English Style” curry powder, as this mix has a very intense flavour due to the cumin it contains.

What ingredients do I need for my vegan curry sausage?

For 2 servings you need the following ingredients:

How to prepare the vegan currywurst?

You can find the list of ingredients and the steps in the recipe card. For tips and hints, just keep reading here.

Cut and fry the onion

Peel and finely dice the onion. Fry it with 2 tbsp canola oil in a saucepan over medium heat for a few minutes until translucent.

Fry the tomato paste

Add the tomato purée and fry for 1 to 2 minutes. Keep stirring so that the tomato paste doesn’t burn.

Cook the sauce for the currywurst

Deglaze with the orange juice and add the diced tomatoes, as well as the soy sauce, curry powder, paprika powder and cane sugar to the sauce pan and simmer over low heat for about 15 minutes.

Fry the sausages

While the sauce is simmering, fry the vegan sausages in a non-stick pan with 2 tbsp canola oil over medium heat until crispy on all sides.

Blend the sauce and season to taste

After 15 minutes, remove the sauce from the heat and puree finely with a hand blender. I also pressed the sauce through a sieve with a spoon. This will make the sauce for the curry sausage finer. If you want something more rustic, you can also skip this step and just puree the sauce with the blender. Season with salt and pepper to taste and the sauce is done. Easy peasy.

Arranging and serving

Slice the sausages with a sharp kitchen knife, arrange on a plate or in a bowl and pour the curry sauce over it. Finally sprinkle some curry powder over the currywurst and you can enjoy your meal.
